Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m a mum of two gorgeous and spirited girls, Piper who is twelve and April who is nine.  My husband Brett is an electrician and we run a family electrical business where I work in admin.

I love to read and sleep in, I wish I washed my car more often, I love fashion and watching The Block! I just got glasses this year, we go camping, in a tent, I feel like I buy Fruchocs by the kilo sometimes, I am terrible in the garden, but am a loyal friend, I rarely change up my cushions and art as I struggle to choose.  I never wore pink once I hit the teens and I still don’t, but I love it.

One Harper Lane started when my second little girl was born, I was looking for something different to what was available in department and baby stores and struggled to find something that I loved.  Fortunate to have a mother who taught me to sew when I was young, I decided to dust of my skills and set out to create something new. And just like that the cot quilts were born.  Right from the beginning I had a desire to bring beautiful, original and practical nursery items to families.  With a  focus on colour, pattern and texture; those qualities remain at the core of my designs.

What’s the best bit about your job?

There are so many aspects that I love.   Meeting expecting parents who are designing a special nursery for their newborn, with all the planning and dreaming that goes into making it a loved space.  Designing new products and patterns, while hoping to offer something unique or different.  Attending markets and helping customers to choose their perfect item.  Sometimes I’m the only person who knows the gender of the baby to come.   Catching up with other small business owners and being involved in the handmade community here in Adelaide.  There are so many other parts of the job I love, it’s difficult to name just a few.

Do you offer a custom design service?

Absolutely.  There is much that can be customized, from personalised wraps and nursery bedding, customised patterns can be designed and products such as cot quilt covers and sheets can be made in custom sizes.

Describe a typical working day

I work during the day and sew at night on the weekends around the girls sports.   So during the week, a typical day would be getting the girls ready for school, doing the school drop-off, coming home and working on our electrical business till pick up time, school sports after school, then the night time family routines and sewing 3 nights a week when the girls are in bed.

On the weekends, I generally sew quite a few hours on one of the days, and from late afternoon to late at night on another.  My girls generally have a friend over to play, go to friends on play dates, hang out with their dad or see their grandparents.  In between sewing I will wash a few loads of clothing, try to keep things tidy and keep everyone fed!

What’s your favourite song to listen to while you’re working?

If I am listening to music it can be very eclectic, good old rock like Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and The John Butler Trio. I also like listening to Les Miserable and The Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman.  Most of the time, however, I have my laptop on and I’m streaming Netflix and recently Amazon Prime, essential for late night sewing sessions.

When I was pregnant I wish some told me…….

Try to not worry about the cooking and cleaning while they are super little, during the witching hour just cuddle them, you’ll never get that time back again.  My mother always told me to take naps when the baby was sleeping, and I did – it was the best thing I could have done for all of us.  It’s okay not to be perfect, you have grown the perfect little baby already.
